Virungas

The success story of Mountain Gorillas is well known and undoubtable. Less considered however is the complicated story of the Batwa people who have historically lived a hunter-and-gather existence on the same slopes of the Virunga Massif, spread across three countries, Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC. This community of people have been forcibly evicted from their homeland and way of life, and now must alter themselves into agrarians in order to make way for the megafauna tourism, which has propelled the region’s economy.
