Tazara Railway
Tanzania's Central Line railway, an 800-mile route from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, offers a rich travel experience that few tourists take, preferring to fly to safari destinations. This historic railway, built in the 1890s during German colonial rule, still uses German-made systems but is being upgraded with a new standard gauge railway set to open a 300-km section between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro by July 2024, backed by $200 million in World Bank financing. The railway passes through key towns, including Dodoma and Morogoro, offering travelers a glimpse of Tanzanian life and history, including stops like Tabora, a former 19th-century trade hub. The journey concludes in Kigoma, near Ujiji, where the famous Stanley-Livingstone meeting took place in 1871.
